Santjie Viljoen is a fine art photographer specializing in landscape, nature and black and white architectural photography.  Commercially she photographs for architects, interior designers and selected product designers.

Nature has always played a great role in her life.  While growing up in very close proximity to the ocean Santjie’s parents instilled in her a great reverence for the beauty and majesty of the natural world that surrounds us.  Her father, George, gave her, her first camera at age six, just before the start of a four-year long journey of circumnavigating the world on their 29ft sailing yacht.  He showed her how to look for those brief moments when sunlight is slightly filtered and yields soft, luminous tones on subject matter. George is an architect and his love for structures found in nature can clearly be seen in his buildings, just like she now seems to be very attentive to the repetition of structural elements in a building and the contiguity of these to natural elements.

She attended the Jack Meyer Art School from grade 11 onwards and the impact of the work’s of painters such as William Turner, Rembrandt, Degas, Monet, Picasso, Cezanne and Modigliani can be seen in her photography.

Her style is characterised by the use of moments of evanescent and luminous lighting situations, by the recognition of nature’s ability of pairing tonalities of complementary colours, and by using facets of abstraction created by movement.

Taking the time to be in that moment that the shutter is released, enables her to relay subtleties within the interaction of human, nature and man made structures.  Her desire is to capture details, sensations, perceptions and feelings that surround or involve a moment, to bring to you the majesty of this beautiful world that surrounds us.  She hopes to elicit and deliver comment on our interaction with this world and in so doing to guide our minds into a discussion with fresh perspectives as a result.
